From Struggle to Triumph: Maureen Ipalei’s Journey with IGAC

Background:

Maureen Ipalei grew up in Vihiga County, Hamisi Sub-County, a region where educational and economic challenges are prevalent. Vihiga County, like many areas in Kenya, faces significant issues with poverty and educational attainment. According to recent statistics, approximately 45% of people in Vihiga County live below the poverty line, and the dropout rate for secondary education in Umuhaya Sub-County is alarmingly high, with nearly 30% of students not completing their education.

Maureen’s family was part of this statistic, struggling to make ends meet with her parents working multiple low-paying jobs to support her and her three younger siblings. Their modest home and limited financial resources meant that the prospect of continuing Maureen’s education was increasingly uncertain.

The Opportunity:

At the age of 14, Maureen’s fortunes changed when she was awarded a four-year scholarship by IGAC. This scholarship was more than a financial gift; it was a holistic support system designed to open doors that had previously been closed to her. It not only covered her tuition fee but also provided access to a robust education mentorship program.

Scholarship Impact:

  1. Educational Access: The IGAC scholarship alleviated the financial pressure on Maureen’s family, allowing them to focus on their basic needs without the added stress of funding her education. For Maureen, this meant a chance to attend and be retained in school and to engage with enriching mentors. The scholarship made education a tangible reality rather than a distant dream. This is what Maureen had to say ’The education support provided by IGA was not only financial but holistic. It not only ensured I was in school but it also gave me the drive I needed to pursue my secondary education. I couldn’t have made it without them”.
  2. Mentorship Program: Alongside the financial support, IGAC’s education mentorship program played a crucial role in Maureen’s development. Her mentors provided guidance on academic challenges, career advice, and essential life skills. This support not only enhanced Maureen’s academic performance but also helped her build confidence and a clear sense of purpose for her future. ‘ IGAC exposed me to mentors who widen my scope in regard to career opportunities that align with my values, skills , hobbies and the job market’, noted Maureen
  3. Family Impact: For Maureen’s family, the scholarship was a significant relief. It eased the financial strain, allowing them to invest more in their well-being and support Maureen’s aspirations. The scholarship brought a renewed sense of hope and optimism to her parents, who had long valued education but struggled to afford it.

‘Kama haigekuwa huu mradi wa IGAC Maureen hangesoma. Kwa hakika sisi kama familia hatukua na namna ya kulipia Maureen karo ya shule. Kama familia tunashukuru sana kwa karo ya shule tuliyopokea’. These were the words of Maureens mother.
